Job prospects for an accountant
The UAE region is seeing an influx of expat accounting and finance professionals, which is serving to fill the vacant roles within multinational corporations.
The thriving start-up culture has also helped to fuel the need for experienced accounting professionals, and 33% are struggling to find the qualified talent they’re looking for. To secure the best accountancy roles, professionals should be experienced in advisory roles and in creating financial processes.
Our research shows that management accountants and commercial accountants are both in high demand and will be two of the most sought after accounting roles for 2020.
ACCA, CIMA and ACA qualifications are desirable on any accounting professional’s CV — employers are looking for newly qualified professionals (less than five years’ experience) or those two are part-qualified (three to five years).
The ability to speak both English and Arabic is also a highly requested skill, which is likely to see an accountant’s prospects increase. The finance sector is set to be heavily affected by new technologies as businesses undergo digitalisation. In light of this, employers are hiring professionals who have excellent communication skills, advanced interpersonal abilities and those who are adaptable.
Accountant salary opportunities
Because of this, a typical accountant salary in UAE organisations of a larger size may be more generous.
A chief accountant can earn up to US$135,000 in an SME, due to the demand caused by the recent rise in startups within the UAE. They are struggling to find qualified senior professionals and are likely to be more generous with their offers. This same role could command a salary potential of US$140,000 in a large company.
Management accountants are likely to see the best starting salaries if they have more than five years’ experience and opt to take an opportunity with an SME rather than a larger organisation (US$79,300 at an SME versus US$75,300 at a larger organisation).
For those with less than five years’ experience, an accountant salary of between US$61,4000 and US$99,400 is typical at a smaller organisation. There may be the opportunity to start on a higher salary if they opt to take a role with a larger organisation. Accounts payable/receivable accountants are likely to see the highest salaries in large companies.
For accounting roles, employers are typically using the offer of training to round out a remuneration package — 41% of CFOs have said they plan to do this. Flexible working is another popular benefit being offered, as well as bonuses (most notably for fund accountants).
